This easy, 5-step bedding formula works every time. No matter your style, following these simple steps creates a warm, inviting, designer-inspired look.
The secret? Layering.
Once you know the formula, styling your bed becomes easy. You can switch out your pillows or change up your style anytime while still keeping your bed cohesive and designer-inspired.
Step 1:
1 Neutral Duvet
First, the base. We recommend starting with a white or neutral colored sheet paired with a white or neutral duvet. This neutral foundation allows for the flexibility to change your style seasonally.
To style like a designer, fold the comforter about halfway down the bed, then fold the top layer back up to meet the end allowing space for layering pillows at the top of the bed.
Since the base stays consistent throughout different styles and trends, investing in quality sheets and bedding is worth it. We recommend the European Linen Duvet Cover from Quince.
Step 2:
2 Sleeping Pillows
Your sleeping pillows are also a part of this foundation. Make sure your pillow size matches the size of your bed. King pillows on a king bed and queen on a queen bed. This helps the bed feel balanced and avoids awkward empty space. You can keep your bed sheets and pillowcases the same or add an optional second layer of the same size pillows with shams that match your duvet. If you do this you can skip step three. For a super soft and high quality sheet set we recommend the Luxe Sateen Core Sheet Set from Brooklinen. Depending on your budget, Target, Amazon, and Home Goods have good, more affordable options as well.
Step 3:
3 Neutral Throw Pillows
Now it's time to start layering. We like to start with neutral throw pillows first before adding more fun decorative ones. It adds dimension without being too overwhelming. For a king bed you’ll need three 26"x26" pillows and for a queen or full you’ll use two 26"x26" or three 24"x24" Pillows.
Step 4:
2 Contrasting Throw Pillows
This is where personality is added. Too much of the same can fall flat, so have fun with this step and focus on contrast here. Introduce some color, texture, and pattern, and the bed will begin to feel complete. You can also add an optional lumbar or ball pillow in addition to the two decorative pillows. Typically the front two pillows will be around 22"x22".
Step 5:
1 Quilt and 1 Throw Blanket
Last but not least, the finishing touches. A neutral foundation allows you to layer in a patterned quilt or textured blanket without it feeling too busy. Fold the quilt into thirds and place at the foot of the bed. Then throw a soft knitted blanket on top for a finishing touch of softness. The Cotton Fisherman Throw from Quince is a great option.
